Can a Bad NOx Sensor Cause Limp Mode?
How NOx Sensor Failures Affect Engine Performance
Definitely, a bad NOx sensor can set off limp mode or engine derate on most modern diesel trucks. The ECM needs NOx sensor data to act upon the SCR (DEF/AdBlue) emissions system.
If the NOx sensor is giving false data, is non-communicative, or is completely dead, the ECM will most likely see it as a fault in the emissions system. In turn, the ECM will take action. Depending on the engine platform and the fault at hand, it can trigger lights on the dash, derate the engine, or limit the speed of the vehicle.
