A Guide to Checking Your Cummins Engine Compatibility for Tuning Solutions from DrunkLab
Introduction
For owners of trucks and pickups with Cummins engines, there is no doubt that the right tuning can boost power, improve throttle response, and increase fuel efficiency. But before ordering a service, there’s always one important question – is your engine compatible with a specific type of tuning or ECM modification?
The good news is that you don’t always have to contact technical support to find out. You can check if your Cummins engine is compatible within a few minutes by using the Engine Serial Number (ESN) and following some easy steps.
This guide will explain how to quickly locate your Cummins engine model, verify it on the official site, and select the appropriate tuning solutions in our official store.
Step 1: Identify the Engine Manufacturer
To begin, verify that your engine is a Cummins.
If your truck is not a Volvo, Mack, or Detroit Diesel (DD), there’s a high chance it’s equipped with a Cummins engine. These engines are usually fitted in trucks manufactured by Freightliner, International, Peterbilt, PACCAR (occasionally), and others.
How to check:
- Open the hood and check the cylinder block for the Cummins logo.
- If you are uncertain, type your truck’s make and model followed by “Cummins engine” into a search engine.
- Most of the time, Cummins engines are painted in bright red, and only rarely in green or black.
Once you confirm that it’s a Cummins engine, the next step is the most important one: finding the Engine Serial Number (ESN).
Step 2: Where to Find the Engine Serial Number (ESN)
Every engine is assigned an ESN: it’s an 8-digit code.
Important: this is NOT the ECM (Engine Control Module) Serial Number – do not confuse the two.
Where to find the ESN: on the engine data plate, in the accompanying documentation, or in the engine passport.
Examples of possible data plate locations on Cummins engines are shown below.
Cummins ISM/QSM

Cummins ISC/ISL
Let’s use 80105381 as an example of an ESN.

Advice: Take a photo of the data plate right away – it may be useful later.
Step 3: Check the Engine Data on the Cummins Website
Go to the official Cummins website: https://parts.cummins.com/
Then follow these steps:
3.1. Enter your ESN (for example, 80105381) in the search bar.

3.2. In the menu that appears on the left, select: Product Information → Engine Dataplate

3.3. A table with engine information will appear. The field we are interested in is “Service Model Name”

Step 4: Finding the Service on the DL.GE Website
Go to the DL.GE website and enter the name of your engine model in the search bar (in our example, X15) or the ECM model (in our example, CM2350).

Select the tuning service from the search results.

Then follow these steps (we also have a video guide detailing this information):
1. After logging in to your account, add the necessary amount to your wallet balance.
2. Book a date and time for the service. The booking time is not strict as long as you connect during our working hours.
3. Submit the VIN number or the ESN of your truck.
4. Make sure you meet the service’s technical requirements. You will need:
4.1. Laptop / PC / VM running Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, or 11
4.2. Communication adapter: RP1210C-compatible device (Nexiq USB-Link, Noregon DLA, DPA5, Inline6, etc.)
4.3. TeamViewer (download the latest version from www.teamviewer.com)
4.4. Cummins Insite 8.5.2 or 8.7.x (activated for full functionality)
5. Go to the cart and complete the payment.
After that, you will receive an email with an order confirmation and further instructions.
Note: If your Internet connection speed is at least 50 Mbps, having Cummins Insite software is optional.
Final Thoughts: Take Control of the Process
These steps will give you a quick way to check if your Cummins engine can be tuned or if the emissions systems can be deleted. In most cases, the programming takes less than an hour.
However, if you still have questions, the engineers at DrunkLab are available 24/7 and ready to help.
