What is ECM/ECU Tuning?
ECM Tuning Basics.
Tuning an ECM (Engine Control Module) also commonly referred to as ECU (Engine Control Unit) is modifying software to improve the engine in a truck. The ECM controls many functions in an engine, such as the air to fuel ratio and the turbo boost. It also controls the EGR and functions that affect the trucks power, efficiency, and the drivability of the truck.
The OEM calibrations are purposely kept at a lower range. This is to ensure fuel quality will not greatly affect the engine in harsh climates and under off normal operational conditions. It is also to ensure the engine meets emissions regulations and long lasting reliability. This also guarantees the engine will perform at a high level in most operational environments, but it is mostly underscaled.
A tune to the ECM that is done by a qualified professional will alter settings, but will keep boundaries secure for the safety of the engine. Tuning also enhances the drivability of the truck. In the trucking industry tuning is also popular for modifying the engine for specific needs such as agriculture, construction, or for a specific fleet.
